How to Get From Here to There: Tips to Travel the Path to Publication

Breaking into the traditional children’s book industry may seem like a daunting endeavor, but it doesn’t have to be if you set bite-sized goals that will move you in the right direction. We’ll discuss reasonable and realistic goals, best practices for reaching them, and how to enjoy yourself on the wonderful journey to publication.
Author-illustrator Dow Phumiruk finds joy in creating children’s books. Her notable projects include award-winning titles such as Counting on Katherine, by Helaine Becker, illustrated by Dow, a Cook Prize winner (Christy Ottaviano Books) and Mela and the Elephant (Sleeping Bear Press), a Colorado Book Award finalist. Recent releases include An Equal Shot: How the law Title IX Changed America, her book with New York Times bestselling author Andrea Beaty, One Girl (Abrams), as well as her debut as both author and illustrator, Hugsby (Viking Children’s Books). Dow has been a member of the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators since 2011 and won SCBWI’s Inaugural Narrative Art Award in 2017. She currently serves as co-Regional Advisor for the Rocky Mountain Chapter of SCBWI. In addition, she is a general pediatrician who teaches student doctors part time.
