Calendar Image Contest
Pre-registration Required, Entries Due: September 4th, 2020

Please upload the following:

  • 1 illustration 8.5″x 11″ (horizontally oriented)
  • Artwork must be newly created within the last two years.
  • JPG files, RGB format (have CMYK available if you win a spot!)
  • Size between 1500 and 2500 pixels wide (have 8.5″ x 11″ 300 dpi available if you win a spot!)
  • File must be named as follows:  LastName_FirstName_Calendar2020.jpg (Example: Windness_Kaz_Calendar2020.jpg)

Process + Prizes! 
Attendees will be encouraged to vote for their favorite three images. Twelve (12) illustrations will be selected and the top vote-receiving winner will grace the calendar cover, receive free Fall 2021 conference attendance, and the honor of having their image featured on RMC 2021 conference materials and merchandise. 2021 RMC calendars will be sold to members. All winners and 2020 conference speakers receive a free copy. Just think… art directors, editors, and influential industry professionals staring at your image for one full month!

Entering this contest is included with conference tuition, but you must pre-register to save your spot.

Voting will be left open through Saturday night. Votes will be tallied around 6pm. Official announcement of winners will be Sunday morning. You do not need to be present on Sunday to win. Kaz will contact you and ask for print-ready artwork. 


First Impressions Illustration Critique Session with DAN SANTAT!
Pre-registration Required, Entries Due no later than: August 30, 2020

You want advice from a Caldecott winner, right? This session will take place the first week of September (date/time TBD). Illustrators who submit images for review will receive an invite to watch the live session and provide questions in advance. The video recording of the session will be available to all attendees during the conference weekend.

In an effort to provide as many attendees with an illustration critique as possible, a group format digital slide show session will be utilized. Each attendee may submit up to three illustrations. Each image will be critiqued live on-screen.

Please upload the following:

  • Up to three kidlit appropriate illustrations.
  • Artwork must be newly created within the last two years.
  • JPG files, RGB format
  • Size between 1500 and 2500 pixels wide
  • File must be titled as follows:  LastName_001.jpg, LastName_002.jpg, LastName_003.jpg (Example: Windness_001.jpg)

Juried Portfolio Contest
Pre-registration Required

For an additional $20.00, illustrators may submit their portfolios for review by industry judges, Pat Cummings, Sylvie Frank, and Stephanie Fretwell-Hill. YOU WILL BE SEEN!

Prizes: The winner will receive a one-on-one portfolio consultation via Zoom with an Art Director at a large publishing house.

The results of the judging will be announced on the first day of conference. Post-conference, Kaz Windness will contact the prize winner and arrange a convenient consultation time with the art director.

  1. Only current SCBWI members may register for the Portfolio Showcase.
  2. The fee for the Portfolio Showcase is $20.
  3. After registering for the Showcase, please upload your portfolio images to your Member Profile on the SCBWI website. If you need assistance, email Kaz Windness at rmc-ic@scbwi.com no later than August 30, 2020. 
  4. Our panel of industry judges will review your images utilizing a rubric on September 10, 2020, so please have your images uploaded by then.

Please Note: No portfolio feedback is provided with this contest. Sign up for a one-on-one portfolio review if you want feedback.


One-On-One Portfolio Consultations Pre-registration Required 

A limited number of 30-minute private critique sessions with esteemed faculty are available to conference registrants. Please note this is a members-only offering. Illustrators should provide a 12-15 image portfolio (website link or PDF) for discussion, but they should be prepared to focus on their four strongest pieces for an in-depth critique. Due to limited space, registration for consultations is online only and first come first serve. Select this optional offering when you register.  PLEASE NOTE: Portfolio reviews occur during the course of the conference while sessions are running. You may miss part of the conference, but you’ll receive a valuable one-on-one review.


Member Book Sales – hosted virtually by BookBar

If you are an SCBWI member, have a children’s book you’ve authored or illustrated, and will be attending the virtual fall conference on September 12-13, 2019, BRAVO! Huzzah! Congratulations! Furthermore, this qualifies you to have one title included in the virtual member book sale during conference weekend. Due to the popularity of this offering, we can only accept books that have been registered by 11:59pm, Monday, August 24, 2020. There will be no exceptions to this deadline.

Please note a few pesky but important rules

  • Only members who are attending the conference may have their book sold at the conference;
  • SCBWI rules allow for only one title per attendee.

  • Please meet the unbreakable deadline, Monday, August 24, 2020. We want to see your book in our store!
  • Carrie Seidel is our book sales conference coordinator and your single point of contact. Please don’t contact our bookstore partner. Optional Illustrator Post-Conference Intensive

Jumpstart a Story with Pat Cummings 

In this 1.5 hour intensive, illustrators will have the unique opportunity to workshop with a master writer and illustrator to develop a spark of an idea into a fleshed-out book concept. With a little imagination, your next picture book project could be one workshop away! Limited to 20 attendees.

Bring: Your sketchbook and/or drawing paper and your preferred writing and drawing tools.

Assignment:  Have a list of 3 THINGS that you love Love LOVE to draw handy.

Pre-registration required, limited space

Intensive sessions provide an opportunity to work on individual projects in a smaller setting under the guidance of a faculty professional. They are reserved for SCBWI members only and on a first-to-register, first-filled basis. You must be registered for conference in order to register for an intensive.
