Carolyn Yoder at Calkins Creek/Astra BFYR has acquired HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT: KATE WARNE AND THE RACE TO SAVE PRESIDENT LINCOLN by Beth Anderson, illustrated by Sally Wern Comport, a nonfiction picture book about the Pinkerton detective’s role in saving Lincoln’s life before his first inauguration. Publication Spring 2025.
Rachel Delaney Craft’s story “Andromeda’s New Brain: Part 1,” about a young cyborg who fights crime on future Earth, appeared in the July/August issue of Cricket magazine.
After completing the Michelle Begley mentor program, Heidi DeStefano received first place in the Children’s Literature category for “Chickie Jurin and the Zamboozie Stew” at the 2022 Wyoming Writers’ Conference.
Every year the Library of Congress hosts the National Book Festival in Washington, DC. Each state selects a children’s book to represent its heritage, and this year New Mexico selected Anna Freeman’s SHAPED BY HER HANDS: POTTER MARIA MARTINEZ!
THE POOP FAIRY (2022), written and illustrated by Sandy Ferguson Fuller, is the feature picture book selected for August through October for the Vail Public Library Storywalk in Big Horn Park, East Vail.
Author Teresa Funke donated a Little Free Library to a mobile home park in Fort Collins stocked with Spanish, English, and bilingual books so the bilingual families in the community can read together. She included books by some Fort Collins SCBWI authors. You can see photos here.

RMC-SCBWI member Karen Gonzales of Denver, Colorado won a $70 prize and 2nd Place Sandra Seaton Michel Middle School Story Award for “The Mystery of La Llorona and Mister Llorón” in the National League of American Pen Women, Inc.’s 2022 Biennial Letters Competition.
Jolene Gutiérrez signed a book deal with Abrams Appleseed for her book about sensory sensitivity, TOO MUCH! The book will be published as a picture book in 2023 and as a board book in 2025. Jolene and her daughter Shaian Gutiérrez also sold their Día de Muertos picture book THE OFRENDA THAT WE BUILT at auction to Chronicle. It is scheduled for a 2024 publication date.
Katherine Hahn’s illustrated online episodic novel, ALEX HOLLOW & THE MONSTERS OF MORNINGSIDE, will conclude August 15 with Chapter 10. Read it here for free through Dec 31, 2022! Laura Perdew’s PB science series, BIOME EXPLORERS, releases August 15 (Nomad Press). The series has five titles: AQUATIC ADVENTURES, DESTINATION DESERT, FOOTSTEPS IN THE FOREST, GRASSLAND GLOBETROTTING, and TOUR THE TUNDRA. Each book takes readers on a journey through a different biome, integrating important science concepts including plant and animal adaptations, and climate.
