MEMBER GOOD NEWS!
The hugest of congratulations to member Andrea Wang, whose book WATERCRESS was just awarded the Asian Pacific/American Award for Literature, the Newbery Honor Medal, and is also this year’s Caldecott Medal Winner, celebrating Jason Chin’s wonderful art for the “most distinguished American Picture Book for children”!
And congratulations, also, to Dow Phumiruk, Ana Crespo, Anna Freeman, Megan Freeman, Andrea Wang and Claudia Mills, who all had books on the “A Might Girl’s 2021 Books of the Year” list.
Christopher Robbins at Familius has bought world rights to JUNE MOON, a bedtime board book written by Lynn Becker and illustrated by Nate Carvalho, that captures a languid summer evening as child and moon reluctantly prepare for sleep. Publication is slated for May 2023.
Juree Sondker at Bala Kids has bought world rights to I AM AN ANTIRACIST SUPERHERO!, written by Jennifer Bacon and illustrated by Letícia Moreno. In the picture book, six-year-old Malik, after learning about racism, decides to “change the world” by becoming an antiracist superhero. Publication is scheduled for Fall 2023.
Samantha Cohoe’s second book, BRIGHT RUINED THINGS (Wednesday Books/Macmillan), a YA fantasy set on a magical island in the roaring 20s, comes out February 15th! Copies can be found here.
Neal Porter at Holiday House/Neal Porter books has bought world rights to GIFTS FROM GEORGIA’S GARDENS, by Lisa Robinson. Member Hadley Hooper will illustrate this picture book biography celebrating Georgia O’Keefe’s creativity.
Ascension Press has just released THE REAL PRESENCE (book trailer here), a picture book by Claudia Cangilla McAdam. Additionally, Ascension has also purchased Claudia’s newest faith-based picture book, ON PETER’S ROOFTOP, a 1st-century tale in which a young thief encounters Jesus, repents, and receives forgiveness. Publication date TBD.

STEM meets Nailed It and The Hunger Games in Jan “J.E.” Thomas’ debut, middle grade novel, CONTROL FREAKS. Told in alternating POVs, the novel follows highly competitive, misfit tweens forced to team up to win their school’s inaugural STEM competition. Levine Querido will publish Control Freaks in spring 2023.
